Tribute to Marjorie Latimer

In July we said goodbye to a dedicated and long-term volunteer, Marjorie Latimer. Sadly, she died on 15 July.

Our favourite (only) nonagenerian volunteer was a walking advertisement for our BDS byline of 'open books open minds'. Marjorie had an alert mind, was an avid reader and was co-founder of a BDS book group that has been meeting just shy of 30 years.

She kept up to date and fully engaged with world happenings, was kind-hearted, always had a smile (despite recent health 'wobbles') and inspired us all. She will be sorely missed by the BDS staff and other volunteers.

A Christchurch poet introduced her to the artform as a young adult and she continued to write for many decades. The short one below reflects her wry wit.

Just a stick

My age is such
My waking stick is noted
More than me
I’m holding it
A prop on wobbly days
But the comments come
For it is coloured
With flowery pinks and mauves
Which make it noticed
Not because it flips apart
And folds
But that it is younger than me
And better looking!

And better looking!
